What is a Discord timestamp?

Discord timestamps are dynamic date tags written in the syntax <t:UNIX_SECONDS:FLAG> — for example, <t:1710547200:F>. Instead of displaying a static string like “8:00 PM EST” that forces everyone in another country to do timezone math, Discord reads the underlying UNIX epoch time (seconds since January 1, 1970 UTC) and renders it in each viewer's own local timezone and language settings automatically.

Choosing the right timestamp format flag

The single letter after the second colon controls how Discord formats the date in chat. Each flag is case-sensitive, and leaving the flag off defaults to f (short date and time):

  • Relative time (:R): Displays a live countdown or elapsed timer such as “in 3 hours” or “2 days ago” that ticks forward automatically without editing the message. Best for raid starts, giveaways, and stream countdowns.
  • Full date and time (:F and :f): :F includes the day of the week (Sunday, 13 September 2026 16:20), while :f drops the weekday for a cleaner inline look. A popular pattern for server announcements is combining both: <t:…:F> (<t:…:R>) so members see the exact local time and the live countdown side by side.
  • Time-only (:t and :T) & Date-only (:d and :D): Use :t for same-day schedules where the date is already clear, and :D for release dates, birthdays, or changelog headers.

Where Discord timestamps work (and where they don't)

Timestamp codes render natively across desktop, web, iOS, and Android in normal channel messages, threads, forum posts, direct messages, webhook posts, and bot embed descriptions or fields. However, Discord does not parse timestamp tags inside custom statuses, channel names, or the 190-character About Me profile bio — pasting <t:…:R> into a bio will display the raw bracket code as literal text.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Discord timestamp?

A Discord timestamp is a small code like <t:1710547200:F> that Discord automatically renders in each viewer's local timezone, perfect for events and deadlines. You paste the code as ordinary message text and Discord turns it into a formatted date for everyone who reads it.

Which timestamp formats does Discord support?

Discord supports short time (t), long time (T), short date (d), long date (D), short date/time (f), long date/time (F), and relative time (R). Relative is the one that counts up or down live, for example 'in 3 hours'.

Why should I use a timestamp instead of just typing the time?

Because a typed time is wrong for most of your server. Writing '8pm EST' forces every member in another timezone to convert it themselves, and someone always gets it wrong. A timestamp renders in each person's own local time automatically, and it stays correct through daylight saving changes.

Do Discord timestamps work on mobile?

Yes. Timestamps render natively on Discord desktop, web, and mobile, and they also work inside bot embeds, channel topics, and forum posts.

Do timestamps work in bios, usernames, or channel names?

No. Timestamp codes only render inside message content, embeds, and a few related surfaces. In a profile bio or a channel name the raw code shows as literal text.

What is a UNIX timestamp?

It is the number of seconds that have elapsed since 1 January 1970 UTC — a single number that describes an exact moment with no timezone attached. That is why Discord uses it: the number is unambiguous, and each client renders it in its own local time.

Is this timestamp generator free?
